6 Floral Alternatives to Roses For Valentine's Day

There are so many ways to express your feelings towards someone, and during Valentine’s Day particularly, people turn to flowers as a means of saying I love you. Long-stem roses are a signature Valentine’s Day gift, however there are so many flowers that are beautiful alternatives to roses if you’re looking for something new. Here are some of my personal favorites…

Orchids

There is something so “elevated” about orchids. You can gift these beauties by the stem or as a plant, and they come in a variety of colors. An orchid plant is the perfect Valentine’s gift to send to your loved one at work because it’s something they can enjoy for weeks to come and if they have a green thumb - even longer!

Tulips

Tulips are beautiful flowers that come in a variety of colors. You can choose to mix up different colors like white, yellow, light pink and red tulips for a more “happy” look, play with different shades of the same color for a more modern look, or keep it simple by going with one color. Red can express deep love and admiration and yellow can express friendship and happiness. In this DIY video tutorial I combined white tulips with Dusty Miller in a mercury glass vase for a simple but striking arrangement that anyone would love.

Anemones

These are a personal favorite of mine to gift during this season. Just think how chic and sexy jewel tone anemones look together, and how pretty and delicate black and white anemones look together. Here are a few different ways to combine anemones with other blooms to create completely different floral arrangement looks.

Amaryllis

Amaryllis come in a variety of gorgeous red shades, perfect for Valentine’s Day. They have large blooms so you can mix them into a mixed floral arrangement or use them by themselves either in one color or by mixing up different colored varieties together. In this floral tutorial video I combined them with spray roses and ranunculus to create a beautiful display of red and gold floral arrangements.

Assorted Flowers

There are so many beautiful flowers that can be mixed together to create a stunning gift during Valentine’s Day. An arrangement of florals with a fresh white and green color palette hints at springtime that’s right around the corner, and allows to to use any white and green flowers or botanicals available to you.

Succulents

Succulents can be presented in a variety of ways and are another perfect gift to give someone because they last for a very long time. They come in different sizes and hues and can be mixed with other cacti or even incorporated in a floral arrangement.

As a lifestyle expert as well as a floral designer, I love the gift of flowers and encourage everyone to explore the world of florals to discover alternatives to the classics that they truly love. You don’t always have to resort to a rose!
