Viva Mexico! Cinco De Mayo DIY Party Decor

Just in time for Cinco De Mayo here is a fun DIY decor tutorial video celebrating the beauty of Mexico! I am obsessed with the bursts of bright color, texture and energy in these festive arrangements. I hope you’ll be inspired by these simple yet expressive pieces for your next Cinco De Mayo party.

Materials

  • Pottery with traditional Mexican patterns

  • Brightly colored chili peppers and limes

  • Empty cans or jars from Mexican brands of sauces, salsas or peppers (use any cans with labels you love!)

  • An beautiful bottle of Tequila or Mezcal

  • A bird house in the shape of a cute taco truck, or any other prop you’d like to use

  • Small bowls

  • Floral foam

  • Scissors, flower clippers or knife

  • Fresh water

  • An assortment of brightly colored flowers. I used red and yellow tulips, roses, dianthus and Kermit mums

How To Make the Floral Arrangements

Floral Arrangements in Sauce Cans:

  1. Soak your floral foam, then cut it to fit inside each can

  2. Cut the stems of your tulips, and mums and insert them into the floral foam so that the flowers sit just above the rim of the can.

  3. Group together the smaller flowers so they display in little clusters

  4. Tuck small chili peppers into the arrangements between the flowers

Taco Truck Birdhouse Arrangement

  1. Soak your floral foam, then cut it to fit inside your base container

  2. Place your prop (our taco truck!) offset on top of the container. You may need to get creative and find a solid base for it

  3. Cut and add roses, tulips and dianthus into the floral foam so that the flowers fill your container and surround your prop

Floral Arrangements in Pottery Containers

  1. Line the inside of your containers if they aren’t water tight

  2. Soak your floral foam, then cut it to fit inside your base container

  3. Circle the perimeter of the container with dianthus and kermit mums

  4. Add Tulips and roses throughout the arrangement and fill in all the gaps where you can see remaining floral foam

Style Your Arrangements

  1. Group all of your floral arrangements together in one or two collections, depending on where you would like to display them

  2. Finish each grouping with add extra details like your Tequila bottle, and bowls of bright chili peppers and limes
