Tips for Designing Meaningful Milestones Events: Birthdays, Graduations, Engagements & More!

Slowing down to mark the meaningful events in life is so important! From birthdays and engagements to christenings, graduations and baby showers, it’s all worth celebrating! I love designing meaningful events for my clients and their families, like this recent icy-blue and white graduation party featured here. It was small but special - a perfect event for this master’s graduate, her family and friends!

Whether you’re planning a small, intimate event, or a big blow-out bash, here are a few tips I always keep in mind…

Celebrate your unique cultural traditions

If you have a special connection to your unique cultural or local heritage, celebrate it! This is a great opportunity to incorporate the traditions and customs you love, and to share them with your larger community. This could be reflected in the food you serve, the music you play and the colors you design with, as well as in special celebratory traditions you include at your party.

Honor the people who helped you get here

Whether it’s a parent, grandparent, friend, coach or teacher, we all have people who have helped us along the way. If you have someone who deserves recognition for what they’ve done to support you, find a sweet way to honor them at your event. Maybe that’s including them in a toast, or surprising them with a gift, a personal floral accessory (corsage, boutonniere or floral headband), or a handwritten thank-you note at their dinner place setting.

Focus on the experience you’re creating for your guests.

You may start your design process inspired by a color palette, theme or season, but truly great design creates an entire experience for those in attendance. As you plan the elements of your event, stay focused on what each design element will contribute to the overall atmosphere, energy and flow of your party. It will create a much more enjoyable event from beginning to end, and it can help you stay focused on what’s most important to you.

Make sure you get to enjoy your own event too!

Hiring a talented team of professionals for your event is the number one way to ensure you feel like a guest at your own party. Even small events take a lot of planning, organization and design! If you’re planning and producing your own event, look for ways to hire event staff to take care of the day-of details while you spend quality time celebrating with your guests.
